Waiting for Shinigami
Chapter 12 Hospitals have a smell, a very particular one, that always makes me jumpy. It's a little bit antiseptic, but that's just attempting to cover the real smell. It's the people, really, not the building itself. They permeate everything with it, and no amount of scrubbing can make it go away, because the scrubbers give it off, too. To me, at least, hospitals smell like quiet desperation. Miss Gracie's room was just like all of the other hospital rooms I have ever been in, cold and impersonal as I once was. I think that's to make up for the fact that what goes on in those rooms is always very personal. Healing, dying, giving birth, rejoicing, grieving, overcoming and giving in, the most personal things I can think of. Sally Po was standing outside that room. She'd ridden in the ambulance and was waiting to ride back with us. She told us Veruca was inside, a small warning of those personal things. Duo opened the door and stuck his head in before motioning that we could enter. Veruca stared up with big brown eyes from her seat by her aunt's bed. She looked pale and worried, and it was obvious that only minutes ago she'd been crying. Still, she managed a weak smile at us. "You made it. I wanted to thank you all for your help and concern. Especially you, Duo. If you hadn't found her-" Her voice choked off as she fought back tears again. Wufei was beside her like a flash, a comforting hand on her shoulder and a worried frown upon his face. "Will she be all right?" he asked. I don't think Duo or I were brave enough to voice it, so we just settled for waiting expectantly for the answer. "The doctor says she should be fine. They closed the head wound and replaced some of the blood she lost. She does have a concussion, but they think it should be very mild. She could wake up anytime between now and a few days from now." "When she wakes up, call me immediately," I said. "Duo will want to come see her, and I have a few questions to ask her. I'm handling this case personally." Wufei nodded. "I will help you. This Miss Gracie seems like a very wonderful woman." Veruca gave us both a tiny smile. "The first thing I'm going to do, when she's better, is take her dancing." That earned her a little smile from both Duo and me. "I think that's a wonderful idea," Duo said softly. "You can all come," she said, looking at Wufei and me. "Your friend Sally and anybody else you want invite. We're going to have a street party and become better people." Wufei chuckled. "Both very noble intentions," he said, "I would be honored to attend." Duo and I exchanged a glance. Wufei wanted to go to a party? Duo's eyes widened a faction of an inch, and I caught his thoughts. Wufei was sweet on Veruca. We both bit our lip and tried not to snicker. "Have you eaten dinner?" Wufei asked Veruca, frowning when she shook her head. "Then you must allow me to take you. We'll drop Sally off on the way. She already ate." "But Aunt Gracie-" she started to protest, but I interrupted, "will be just fine with Duo and me here to look after her. We'll call Wufei if there is any change at all." Reluctantly, Veruca allowed herself to be led away from her aunt's room. Outside, Sally could be heard agreeing with Wufei and insisting he take Veruca to get a good meal. I say down in the chair beside Miss Gracie's bed and pulled Duo into my lap and settling my arms about his waist. "Poor girl, she doesn't stand a chance," "I sincerely hope you mean Veruca," Duo said, putting his arms around my neck. "Of course. Miss Gracie will be fine, and there's nothing wrong with Sally." "Heero, I want to talk to you about something. Did you really mean what you said that time, about only doing something if I truly wanted to do it?" I smiled to myself. I had expected something like this for a while. Duo was searching for himself. What he didn't realize was that I would love him no matter who that turned out to be. "I did. It doesn't matter to me what you do, Duo, or even if you do anything at all. Well, except what we do together. Take that away and it would matter quite a bit" I teased. He shook his head. "You are something else, Heero Yuy," he said in mock annoyance. He was so beautiful, so exquisite. I knew then that nothing, ever, could displace him; nothing else could put me in the awe he inspired. I opened my mouth to take a chance, to say what was in my heart, but a slender finger covered my lips. "Not yet," he said. "I know, but I want to be ready when you say it." I shut my mouth again, a little disappointed, but hopeful. He wouldn't have stopped me if there was no hope of him ever "being ready," would he? ~ * ~ |
